Car Free Day

posted in: automotive companies

Mexico city is infamous for its air pollution. The city is enveloped in a toxic smog between the months of November to May and the lethal air causes the premature death of thousands of people. The smog causes thousands of people to suffer from Asthma and increases the risk of cancer greatly. In Europe, Milan is one of the most polluted cities and problems with smog have started to become more evident. However the government has been trying to alleviate the problem with a “car free” day recently imposed on the city.
The “car free” day scheme was introduced in 2007. The day is triggered when pollution level exceeds standard limits for a twelve day period. Last Sunday all traffic was banned from the city between the hours of 08.00am and 18.00am. Cars which give off high emissions were actually banned from the city from Thursday. In total 120,000 cars were affected.
Environmentalists are not happy with the solution. They say it is not enough to solve the issue and that more buses and better public transports would provide a better and ongoing solution. Unfortunately this is going to take time and money and the “car free” day is possibly a good interim measure.
Is this something which London could learn from? It has widely been reported that the air in London is less than desirable with it constantly reaching levels which break EU standards. London has promised to make huge changes by the year 2013. Maybe we need some radical changes such as VW London “car free” day”. However I think it would be more like “car free year” to totally clean up London.
